Summer time in Mykonos equals hot weather, crowds but still amazing views. My trip was the first weekend of july, right during peak season. Prices for everything went up, but you have to pay to play and they know the people will always come.
While roaming Ryanair, I found some great tickets to Mykonos. Roundtrip Frankfurt to Mykonos for 91€ and I had to book it fast. Another solo trip to plan, so I grabbed my handbag, camera and tripod. For the past few years the Islands of Greece have been on my list to visit. I made it to Athens in january, see the post about my first time in Greece here.
Getting Around
Scouring the inter-webs for a hotel in the best location for my price range took some time. Being that it was during high season I expected the prices to be on the upper side. You can choose between the popular beaches in the South, the East side for less crowds and the West side to be within walking distance of town. There are countless rentals for popular mode of transportation here on the island, ATV’s, bikes and cars. There are big local buses with routes from the port to the town, to the beaches and to the airport. Another option is boat taxis; they are available really cheap taking you from the new to the old port of Mykonos.
Things to do
Mykonos is known as the party Island and this is definitely the vibe you get walking around in the evenings. There are countless bars, fancy restaurants with outdoor seating. All around the little alleyways there are small spots for cheap gyros. You will see all types of people, hear snippets of different languages as you wander around. The amazing sunset views in little Venice are worth it. You can’t miss the photo op at the windmills, and the blue and white facades of the old town. There are many opportunities to shop from high end like Louis Vuitton to the corner souvenir shops. Oh and the many beaches and of course that greek food, just yummy!
Recommendation
Like I said before high season means crowds; so to see the beauty of the town minus the crowd you have to get there early. I was out of the doors at 7am and I got the town to myself. I found a spot at the port to watch the locals out and about setting up work. A couple of people who had too much to drink the night before were stumbling home. But no crowds and perfect time to take your pictures.
